Local Perspectives

Here’s what current residents say about living in Sturgeon Bay.

Patrick and I moved to Sturgeon Bay back in the Spring of 2012 – moving up here from a college town in Iowa not really knowing what to expect. Within the first few weeks of getting acclimated to the town we fell in love with everything – especially the family owned businesses. Everyone we met was beyond friendly and encouraging/welcoming to us when we were brand new to town. This past fall when we were both quarantined due to COVID an idea that Patrick had thought of years ago finally had a chance to become a reality. We created Door County Bagel Company! Currently we are a home based business with the goal of having a storefront by the end of 2021.

Urban amenities, small town charm, and over 300 miles of shoreline are some of the main reasons why Ben and I chose to move back to our hometown. We love that we have access to locally grown produce, a lively entertainment district and a water view all within walking distance from our home. Our pup, Arnie, especially loves Sturgeon Bay’s Bridge Walk! The one-mile walking loop around the Michigan Street Bridge and Oregon Street Bridge runs through the heart of both the West and East Waterfront Districts and features some of the best views of our Working Waterfront.

Sturgeon Bay is the third Door County location of our gallery and it, by far, offers us the best of everything – live/work space, entertainment, food, supplies and wonderful neighbors…and we can walk pretty much everywhere. We gutted an 1860’s commercial building for our gallery and apartment with brick arched windows overlooking the steel bridge and canal..a “ringside seat” for the waterfront. What more could you ask for?

Door County used to be my home away from home. For the past eight years, Sturgeon Bay has been my real home where I’m proud to have the opportunity to make exciting theater happen in a community chock full of artists, actors and musicians plus all the residents and visitors who love what artists create.
